The Early Years

Lotus Group is the brainchild of its founder, the illustrious Tan Sri Datuk R. Doraisingam Pillai who hails from Penang. From a young age, he realised the importance of doing well, in both his work and personal capacity. At the tender age of 15, he joined his father’s business, where he was taught the ropes, from building contacts to developing a new business. Since then, he has never looked back.

In 1987, Tan Sri Datuk R. Doraisingam Pillai migrated to Kuala Lumpur with his family. Realising that he was now in charge of the family, he used the skills learnt and opened Lotus Family Restaurant in Jalan Masjid India which he then moved to Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya. Back then, it was the first banana leaf restaurant that had waiters in bow ties and full service. Working tirelessly to generate a profitable business, he personally sourced for the best and freshest ingredients, and even negotiated on the pricing for bulk purchases. This allowed him to ensure that not only was the quality consistently maintained, but at the same time, made necessary improvements for business growth. With its extensive menu consisting of more than 100 vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, most of which are authentic recipes sourced from across India, this restaurant has since become one of the best banana leaf restaurants in the Klang Valley.

Our Mission To Entertain

As an individual with entrepreneurial foresight, Tan Sri Datuk R. Doraisingam Pillai recognised the vast untapped potential of the entertainment industry. He began with the distribution of Tamil, English and Chinese movies with the establishment of Lotus Five Star AV Sdn Bhd in 2002. He also cultivated strong relationships with renowned directors and actors such as Raymond Wong, Donnie Yen, Datuk Yusof Haslam and many more.

Lotus Five Star AV Sdn Bhd has emerged as the main distributor of Tamil and Hindi movies in the country for the last two decades. It holds the record of the highest-grossing Chinese movie in Malaysia for Ip Man 3 in 2015 at RM30.5 million and Ip Man 4 : The Finale in 2019 for RM37.0 million. It also distributed Bigil in 2018 at RM13.0 million and Darbar in 2020 at RM11.0 million, which were some of the the highest-grossing Tamil movie releases in Malaysia featuring Rajinikanth.

After gaining significant exposure in the film distribution industry, the Group naturally ventured into the cinema business with the launch of Lotus Five Star Cinemas Sdn Bhd in 2009. Today, LFS Cinemas is one of the largest cinema chains in Malaysia with 14 outlets, 61 screens and a seating capacity of 10,096 nationwide.

Achieving Growth Through Diversification

To future-proof his business, Tan Sri Datuk R. Doraisingam Pillai diversified his business into the real estate, plantations, hotels and resorts, construction, convenience store, healthcare, security and technology sectors. Through sheer commitment and grit, he continued to strengthen these businesses, creating a strong brand portfolio as he recognised the vast potential that Malaysia had to offer, backed by robust consumer demand.

With the strong fundamentals in place and a diversified business portfolio, Tan Sri Datuk R. Doraisingam Pillai believes that Lotus Group is well-positioned to compete in today’s dynamic business environment, with growth segments identified that will lead this company towards further success.
